Activists blockade BAE Systems factory to protest arms sales to Israel

Activists blocked entrances to defence company BAE Systems’ factory near Blackburn on International Workers’ Day on Wednesday. Protesters held signs calling for sanctions on Israel and an end to arms sales. MANPalestine Action, a pro-Palestine initiative based in Manchester, said BAE Systems “is complicit in Israel’s genocide by providing essential parts for the F-35 fighter jets that are devastating Gaza.“ This event was part of a coordinated May Day blockade, during which protesters shut down three arms factories across the UK and the entrance of the Department for Business and Trade in London. In addition to the BAE Systems factory in Lancashire, there were protests at BAE Systems’ factories in Glasgow and Wales. The May Day action responds to a call from the Palestinian Federation of Trade Unions, urging the international labour movement to “disrupt the flow of commerce and trade that sustains Israel’s military occupation“.
