Another incredible Dana Point dolphin stampede!
Dolphin stampedes occur when the animals porpoise out of the water at a high rate of speed. Porpoising is the fastest mode of travel for dolphins because there is less resistance in the air than in water.
It’s unknown for certain what causes these common dolphins to stampede. It’s thought the dolphins could be evading a natural predator such as orcas, racing to catch a food source, or meeting up with another pod of dolphins.
Dolphin stampedes happen spontaneously and can occur anytime throughout the year.
Southern California has the greatest density of dolphins per square mile of anywhere else on earth. This includes nearly 450,000 common dolphins, the species in this video, as well as several other types of dolphins. Dana Point is one of the best places in the world to see large mega-pods that can number in herds of up to 10,000.
