Putin meets Kyrgyz President ahead of V-day; Kremlin confirms cancellation of some May 9 observances

Russian president Vladimir Putin met Kyrgyz counterpart Sadyr Japarov on eve of Russia’s key WW2 anniversary celebrations. The holiday, falling on Tuesday, marks the 78th anniversary of Germany’s capitulation in World War II after a relentless Red Army offensive pushed German forces from Stalingrad, deep inside Russia, all the way to Berlin, about 2,200 kilometers (1,300 miles). It is usually marked with events and parades but many regions have canceled their May 9 observances because of concerns the events could be targets for Ukrainian attacks. Speaking during a daily briefing with reporters, Peskov said the decision not to hold the “Immortal Regiment“ procession was made by its organizers, adding that the Kremlin understood the reasons behind it.
