Multicolored sheen observed on water as toxic train derailment concerns local Ohio residents

A multicolored sheen was seen in a creek in East Palestine, Ohio, amid concerns about water safety since a train carrying toxic substances derailed on February 3 near the small town of roughly 4,700 residents. The derailed cars carried vinyl chloride, a colorless gas that is industrially produced for commercial use, exposure to which has been associated with increased risk of a rare forms of liver, brain, lung and blood cancers. Experts said that much remains unknown about the dangers posed to residents by the spilled toxins, as workers were seen wearing respirator masks and gloves amid ongoing cleanup efforts.
