Ombro-Cinema

This is a French toy that demonstrates a very simple form of animation. The animation is created by sliding a long roll of paper behind a plastic sheet which has a fence painted on it. The paper roll has two slightly different versions of a scene drawn in an interlaced fashion. That is, thin vertical strips of one scene alternated with strips of the other scene, When the roll is slid behind the fence image, only one scene is visible at a time; the other scene is hidden behind the bars. As with animated cartoons, persistance of vision produces the illusion of motion of a single image.
