Inside Italy’s biggest mafia trial in decades - BBC News
Members of Italy’s most powerful mafia are facing charges including murder, extortion and drug-trafficking, in a trial that began two years ago.
In the biggest trial of its kind since the 1980s, more than 330 suspects in the ’Ndrangheta mafia group have been testifying and 70 of them have been convicted.
The group, based in the southern region of Calabria, dominates the global cocaine market and has an estimated annual turnover of around $60bn (£49bn).
Nicola Gratteri, the prosecutor leading the country’s fight against organised crime, said convicting the group would create “breathing space” for the community.
