Now, Meanwhile revisits the 3-track EP with a trio of outstanding new remixes. Henri Hurtig has been at the vanguard of modern underground dance music for close to two decades with his Cid Inc. production alter-ego. Some 600 production credits for the likes of microCastle, Lost & Found and his own highly respected, Replug, are testament to an enduring appeal as is a packed tour calendar where the Finnish star continues to tour the world. Now making his Meanwhile debut, the Cid Inc. remix of “Elemental” retains a similar rhythmic poise to the original as a familiar bass pattern blends with a squeaking, bleeping effects layer. A trademark storming beat and seething dancefloor character is in full evidence as a distorted and frenetic breakdown leads to a new melodic character in the second half to brilliant effect. The result is a typically impressive reworking full of dynamism and brio. A rising star in the progressive firmament since early work for EIN2 in 2018, Tantum has hit considerable heights with his music on Juicebox Music, Mango Alley and Guy J’s Lost & Found. A Meanwhile debut in mid-2023 saw “Secondary / Suan Pan / Narko” place the German star front and centre with a musical triptych of the highest order, as Tantum now returns with a deep and innovative take on “Time to Space”. Replete with rolling groove and deep bassline presence, a more stripped back offering allows the central motif from the original a chance to flourish within a new cadenced structure, while richly textured pads flow effortlessly across the musical stream. Rising and falling in easy patterns, a new arpeggiated pattern makes itself heard alongside a raft of additional production material and counterpoint melodies as the remix heads towards a rousing finale. Reworking “EXT 135” themselves, Meanwhile head honchos, GMJ & Matter have given the track a sublime “Ambient Reprise”. Stripping away the powerful rhythmic backdrop of the original, the duo have created a sublime interpretation that captures the central melodic elements of the original, allowing them to blossom unencumbered by dancefloor character. The result is a chorus of deliciously crafted keynotes and melodies that blend together in seamless fashion, held together by a deep sub-bass groove. The result is a smooth and pristine slice of electronica magic.
