KOSOVO: MITROVICA: GRENADE ATTACK (V)

(15 Jul 2000) Voice and effects VOICED BY: Vera Frankl XFA A rifle grenade has been fired from the ethnic Albanian part of Mitrovica, in Kosovo, into the Serb section of the divided city, triggering about two hours of unrest. Serbs at first thought that the grenade, fired on Friday night, had hit a cafe frequented by the Serb community, prompting a large crowd of them to gather. No one is believed to have been injured in the blast. VOICE-OVER: 0003 A rumour quickly spread through the Serb community that the grenade, fired from the ethnic Albanian part of Mitrovica on Friday night, had hit a cafe frequented by Serbs. 0014 NATO-led peacekeepers say a crowd of angry Serbs rushed to the area, believing that the cafe had been hit. 0022 UPSOUND: Sound of gunfire from Serb area 0024 The sound of gunfire could be heard from the Serb section of this divided Kosovan city. 0029 French peacekeepers blocked a road leading to the Albanian area, as the demonstrators chanted and shots rang out. 0035 UPSOUND: Serbs chanting “Serbia“, followed by sound of gunfire 0039 By midnight the crowd had dispersed, but a few minutes later another grenade was fired, bringing Serbs back onto the streets. 0046 The French K-FOR commander rushed to the scene to convince the leader of the Serb community that the Serb cafe hadn’t been hit. 0055 The crowd eventually dispersed and went home at about 1 o’clock in the morning on Saturday. 0102 The unrest resulted in some damage to property, but no one is believed to have been injured in either of the blasts. 0108 French troops are enforcing an informal division of Mitrovica, but ethnic Albanians say this is a violation of the peace agreement, which provided for a multi-ethnic Kosovo in which people could return to their former homes.
