Lord Parjanya (The Rain Bringer)
Lord Parjanya is according to Veda, a deity of rain, thunder, lightning, and the one who fertilizes the earth. In Vedic Sanskrit Parjanya means “rain“ or “raincloud“. Parjanya is sometimes potrayed as the rain-bull controlled by the superior Indra. The thunder is his roar. He is the father of arrow or reed which grows rapidly in the rainy season. He is also considered as a protector of poets and an enemy of flesh-eating fire.
He is the father and the earth is the mother. The farmers worship this bull. Even today, the farmers keep at least one bull and elaborate pujas are conducted for him. The winds blow forth, the lightnings fall; The plants shoot up; heaven overflows. Nurture is born for the whole world when Parjanya quickens the earth with seed. Draw up the great bucket, pour it down; Let the streams released flow forward. Drench the heaven and earth with ghee; let there be a good drinking place for cows. - Rigveda.
The mantra or prayer “nikaame nikaame nah parjanyo varshatu“ is from Yajur Veda, . Which translates to “The clouds have to form, the clouds have to form, it has to rain, it has to rain!“
The Hymn in the above video is dedicated Lord Parjanya and is from the Rig Veda, . The Translation of the Hymn can found in the Subtitles added in the video.
