The film tells the true story of Stephen Glass, who at the age of 23 joins the New Republic and begins a rapid rise with spectacular articles on the reprehensible behavior of politicians at conventions, hacker exploits and more. However, an investigative journalist, Adam Peneberg, discovers numerous discrepancies in his articles and the editor of the newspaper, Chuck Lane, undertakes to verify them, discovering that they were largely or entirely invented.
