People have asked James Reeves whether or not subsonic rounds are “just the same as .22“. As demonstrated in this video, they are not. James tries out a Ruger LC Carbine in with FN SB193 subsonic ammunition against not one, but TWO stacked soft body armor panels (one alone will stop a 9mm rounds). Will the defeat level II soft armor?
SB193 subsonic (formerly called SS193) is a subsonic cartridge featuring a 55 grain or 60 grain full metal jacket boat tail projectile. The SB193’s subsonic speed eliminates the supersonic “crack“ created by when a bullet travels faster than the speed of sound. However, SB193 is tuned for the 10“ barrel of the FN P90 bullpup PDW, and as seen in this video, the 16 inch barrel on the Ruger LC Carbine will sometimes accelerate the SB193 to supersonic speeds. Even so, the muzzle report is still significantly reduced when using SB193 together with a suppressor. Due to the greatly decreased muzzle velocity, the SB193 also has reduced recoil. SB193 can be identified by its white tip color, and it is currently restricted by FN to military and law enforcement customers only.
