In one sense, the loss was no surprise as the Gunners had not won at Stamford Bridge since 1974. Perhaps they were jaded after finally seeing off Leeds in the third replay of their FA Cup fourth round tie during midweek; Chelsea meanwhile had had a full week to prepare for this game.
