The rich collections of the museum are comprised of artfacts discovered in various regions governed by the Ottoman Empire.. Discovered during the excavations led by Osman Hamdi Bey in 1887, The Sidon Royal Necropolis is acknowledged as one the most important findings of the archeology world. And the Alexander Sarcophagus is considered to be the most important work in the Istanbul Archaeological Museums was awarded with the European Council Award in 1993.
