Jules Pascin (or Julius Mordecai Pincas, also known as the “Prince of Montparnasse“) was a Bulgarian painter and graphic artist of the Paris School, known for his paintings and drawings in watercolor and pastel. He most often depicted partially clothed women in casual poses. The artist lived most of his life in France and became a U.S. citizen in 1920. Pincas received his first art education in Vienna in 1902 at the age of seventeen. In 1903 he moved to Munich, where he studied at the Moritz Heimann Academy. There he met Paul Klee, Alfred Kubin and Wassily Kandinsky. In Munich (1904-1905) and Berlin (1905) he collaborated with the satirical publications “Simplicissimus“ and “Lustige Blätter“ in which he published his drawings. Like Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec, Pascin used the environment and his friends, both male and female, as subjects for his works. In the 1920s, Pascin mainly painted fragile girls, prostitutes waiting for clients, or models waiting for the end of a shoot. His fleeting paintings sold readily, but the money he made was quickly spent. His experience as a satirical draughtsman and his knowledge of German Expressionism are evident in his early work, where some portraits recall Otto Dix or Grosz with less ballsy and less violent strokes. He quickly evolved towards pastel, almost unreal colors, which he skillfully harmonized with the theme of the female body, the focal point of his work. Among the painters of the Paris School, Pascin and his art were characterized by an imposition of expressive truth and melancholic softness. He indulgently painted the inner world of “girls“ using pearlescent strokes, light shimmering colors, shades of gray, pink, ochre and violet-blue.
