Taiwanese President Tsai Ing-wen boarded a warship on July 26, 2022, to watch a live-fire air and naval drill simulating the island’s military response to a potential People’s Liberation Army attack from mainland China. The drill was part of the annual five-day Han Kuang, a series of war games considered to be Taiwan’s most-important military exercise of the year. Taipei has come under growing pressure from Beijing, which claims Taiwan as its own territory and has not ruled out the use of force to take control of the island. Taiwan has also become a major point of friction between Beijing and Washington, amid reports that US House Speaker Nancy Pelosi plans to visit the island in August.
