Eritrean Anthology started out as a side project during the early days of Covid, with the primary objective to raise awareness over social media about the existence of Eritrean 45s from 1970-75, often overlooked or unknown of their existence. The project gathered momentum over the last 2 years, whilst in parallel my pursuit to collect as many records as I could possibly find gradually started to bear fruit, and has since enabled me to showcase these forgotten treasures to a community of curious listeners as well as those that connect to it culturally.
“The first record on the list is Halhalta Fichrichi, a soul-jazz influenced record performed by the legendary Zerai Deres Band and fronted by their lead singer, Haile Ghebru. I have made it a habit of mine to start my Eritrean sets with this record, as a tribute to a deceased family member whom at one time this record belonged to. It is probably the only Eritrean 45 I own that hasn’t been previously owned by more than one person.
The vinyl era in Eritrea was short lived, spanning merely over 5 years, producing no more than 75 singles with limited copies in distribution making these records a collectors item no doubt, but more worryingly an era in Eritrean music history that may be at risk of being forgotten if not documented or celebrated.
I finished the set with one of the handful of Eritrean music inspired LPs produced in the diaspora, by German krautrock band, Dambisa, who features Eritrean vocalist Jamal M. Jassin. The track you hear is Asmarena, a cover originally written and performed by Osman Abdulrahim, the same artist who features twice during this set.“
