The quake occurred at around 4:43 p.m. off Miyazaki prefecture on the western major island of Kyushu. Some of the tsunami advisories, originally issued for the Pacific coast of the major western islands of Kyushu and Shikoku, have been lifted, except for Miyazaki. The agency said tsunami waves of up to 50 centimetres were detected along parts of Kyushu’s southern coast and the nearby island of Shikoku about a half hour after the quake struck.
