DIAME & NDJOUK • Tribute to Doudou Ndiaye Rose • Watch in 4K Les Rosettes, Aly Ndiaye Rose, Ben Aylon, Ndiaye Rose Family Live in Parcelles Assainies, Dakar, Senegal, 2023 The second video of the trilogy I created with Aly Ndiaye Rose, the Ndiaye Rose family drummers, and Les Rosettes - the all-women drum group of the family in Senegal. In this tribute to Doudou Ndiaye Rose, we present a medley of two compositions. I find it highly relevant to share a co-creation that brings together women and men from different ethnicities, religions, and cultures. In the first part of the video, I play the xalam while the family sings a song that was recorded by Julian Jouga and Doudou Ndiaye Rose in the 90’s. The song is called ’Diame,’ which means ’Peace’ in the Wolof language. Their collaboration signified and still signifies co-existence and peace as Julian Jouga, a Christian choir leader, and his choir joined Doudou Ndiaye Rose and his family, who are deeply rooted in Islam, to record several songs that still remain a huge asset for the Senegalese people as a whole. In the second part of the video, we all play together a rhythm called ’Ndjouk’, which originates from the Serere ethnic group in Senegal.
