Antinatalism: An Evolutionary Dead End ⸺ Philosophy by Glenn Campbell

Glenn Campbell responds to the antinatalist argument that no one should have children. Yes, having children is expensive and risky, but if no one does it, out society—or at least the best parts of our society—will expire. If your culture is to continue beyond the current generation, you have to figure out some way to handle the antinatalism problem. Speaking in an idyllic location in the California Redwoods, Glenn identifies two forms of antinatalism: “pragmatic“ and “hard-core“. The pragmatic people want to have children and see them as valuable but feel they can’t afford them. The hard-core antinatalists believe that having children is morally wrong, because of the potential pain you’re bringing into the world and the damage you are supposedly doing to the environment. Darwinism will address the hard-core antinatalists, efficiently killing them off. That leaves the pragmatic antinatalists, who just need some way to address the high cost and risk of raising children. This entails the sharing of risk among a group of people. Instead of one or two parents going it alone, maybe a group of parents should band together to raise children. If you would like to hear Glenn’s proposal for an alternative family structure, called the “Post-Nuclear Family“.
