Galassiri Tablet Weaving from Sulawesi

There are less than a dozen families still practicing tablet weaving in South Sulawesi. Their heirloom tortoise shell cards were bought out by collectors before Threads of Life met these women, and they now rely on the cards from which SIM cards are popped before they are put in a cellphone. Despite the change in materials, the skill and memory required to manipulate the cards and yarns to achieve the region’s traditional designs are in tact.
