History: Merck toch hoe Sterck is a Dutch independence song that dates back to the 17th century. The Dutch fought their indepenence form spain in the 80 years war. This war ended in 1648 with the treaty of Münster. In this treaty the Spanish would keep parts of the southern Netherlands and the Netherlands would be recognized as an independant nation by Spain.
