It was initially occupied by 4 clans; namely the Gheza Gurtom, the Gheza Shelele, the Gheza Serenser and Gheza Asmae. They lived in conflict and kept receiving attacks from the nearby clans. The women proposed that the 4 clans come together to fight against these external clans. This is where the word Asmara came from basically meaning They all came together. The city was originally a small village, but it grew in importance in the 19th century when it became a major trading center. In 1889, #asmara was occupied by Italy and became the capital of Italian #Eritrea. The Italians invested heavily in Asmara, and the city underwent a period of rapid modernization. Many new buildings were constructed in the Art Deco and Modernist styles, and Asmara became known as Africa’s Little Rome. In 1941, Asmara was captured by British forces during World War II. The city remained under British administration until 1952 when it became part of the Federation of Ethiopia and Eritrea. In 1962, Ethiopia unilaterally dissolved the federation and annexed Eritrea.
