Extraction 2 has a 21-minute-long “oner“ that is actually composed of 99 individual shots ranging from 30 seconds to 1 and a half minutes in length all seamlessly stitched together.
Just like its predecessor, Extraction 2 leans heavily on the stunts and practical effects and this actually means that there was also a lot of digital visual effects too.
Because although people expect muzzle flashes and explosions to have VFX elements to them, most don’t realize that large portions of a car flipping towards the screen have to be rebuilt in order to remove rigging....
Or that scenes shot on top of skyscraper are almost always shot on studio backlots and even though people know this helicopter crash had to be a digital effect, most wouldn’t suspect the snow was too.
All the muzzle flashes and bullet impacts in this film were visual effects.
The muzzle flashes were recreated from FuseFX’s library of real muzzle flashes and each one is unique and specific to the weapon being used in the scene.
Set extensions were also required throughout the film either to add more depth to what was already there...
Or to integrate a set piece into the scene.
In fact, almost every scene in the film uses digital effects to either adjust, enhance, or add more detail to what they managed to capture “In Camera“.
And this is perhaps what the Extraction films achieved best of all.
By Introducing so much realism into every stunt and every action scene, it makes it tremendously difficult to isolate the parts of those scenes that aren’t actually real and therefore makes it easier for the audience to accept that everything that we are seeing is true.
The one-take action sequence during the first act of the film is 21 minutes long, it took 4-5 months to rehearse and 29 days to shoot.
