The greatest violinists before Paganini were Vivaldi, Tartini, Locatelli and Viotti. The legend of the devils trill sonata is Tartini saw the devil playing violin in a dream then woke up and wrote down the music he heard, this sonata was not published until around 30 years after his death. He wrote 135 violin concertos, about 200 sonatas for violin and continuo, and about 40 trio sonatas.
Andrew Manze is a baroque specialist who recorded many neglected compositions played on baroque instruments in the baroque style. Other baroque specialists include Wallfisch, Van Dael, and especially Podger.
I would also advise everyone to get the wonderful book “Tartini His Life and Times“ by Lev Ginzburg while you still can as it is out of print and starting to become hard to find.

It is my hope that a whole generation of new violinists will follow her example by recording, performing, and preserving neglected music of the romantic masters. I dream of a series of box set recordings, live performances, and DVDs of the music of Beroit, Rode, Sauret, etc - recorded by Ehnes, Kaler, Kavakos, Mintz, Repin, etc and also recitals filled with this kind of music. If that ever happened I would truly be in fiddle nirvana!
In addition to that, I think of what a recital was really like back then, for example imagine Paganini playing a Viotti concerto but using his own cadenza or better yet, improvising a solo using a cadenza as a guideline. Then after that go on to play his own music. Perhaps Kreisler was the last violinist to do that? But what if a whole new generation of players started doing that again? It doesn’t hurt to encourage people and make suggestions does it? Am I asking too many questions?
I wanted to point out the very recent recordings (many of them are world premieres) of the neglected music of beroit, suaret, rode, kreutzer, bazzini, viotti, vieuxtemps, joachim, hubay, lalo, saint saens, sarasate, wieniawski, and ferdinand david on the labels naxos, chandos, hyperion, and dynamic featuring soloists such as gringolts, charlier, graffin, aand hagai shaham.
I want to especially congratulate Hyperion for launching a massive series of recordings of 19th century violin concertos including many composers I have never even heard of. My fear is that if we do not support their efforts the recordings (and scores) will go out of print and get lost or forgotten.
You can bet if these recordings ever do go out of print, I will upload them if I ever have a chance to get them all before they do. People please listen and do me a favor and pay money for this stuff. Is anyone listening? Does a tree make a sound in the forest if no one is there to hear it? Does it do any good to scream at a brick wall?
Another thing I wanted to mention is a person I’m pretty sure is someone from known as Brahm. He has a channel at youtube known as henrivieuxtemps that has a disgusting amount of videos with sheet music scores synched to the music I have mentioned above. He is even more of a violin maniac than me and alot of those videos feature the music of composers I have never heard of. I must insist that everyone and their mom goto his channel and applaud all his work.
