Prof Suresh Sundram: Schizophrenia, clozapine and molecular biology
Professor Suresh Sundram asks what is the actual molecular biology underlying the pathology of #schizophrenia?
2:00 Schizophrenia has heterogeneous symptoms (grouped approximately into Psychosis, Deficit Syndrome, Cognition and ’Other’ including suicidality). Only psychosis has any treatments.
7:29 Clozapine has anti-psychotic effects mediated through the epidermal growth factor (EGF) receptor!
12:40 EGF reduced in schizophrenia but not other psychotic disorders.
15:07 Clinical study to translate these findings into biomarkers. They found that about 50% of patients responded to clozapine.
19:47 Conclusion
