Back in 2011, archaeologists digging at the site of Avaris, a once great ancient Egyptian city, made a truly astonishing and rather shocking discovery when they unearthed four ancient pits that had been dug near a palatial compound and contained several dismembered, bodiless hands. A total of 16 separate hands were eventually dug up, all of which turned out to be far larger in size than the average human hand, leading to speculation as to whom they had been taken from and why.
