Today we’ll be exploring the evolution of the atom, starting from J.J. Thomson’s Plum Pudding model, on to Rutherford’s Planetary model, and then on to the Bohr model, which is one of the central focuses of this lecture. After going over the strengths and weaknesses of each, we’ll see how de Broglie’s crazy ideas about the duality of matter manifest themselves in the Bohr model, which we’ll use to (partially) derive the Rydberg equation.
