APGAR newborn assessment score scale (made easy) is a quick test used to assess the status of a newborn after birth. APGAR is used to assess a newborn at 1 minute and 5 minutes after birth. If the score is 6 or less the newborn will be assessed again at 10 minutes after birth. The word APGAR is a mnemonic for the categories assessed during the APGAR score assessment. The letters of APGAR stand for the following: Appearance (skin color), Pulse (heart rate), Grimace (reflex irritability), Activity (muscle tone), Respiratory (effort).
