Steven Edginton says he received a backlash from the Home Office following his story alleging officials ‘celebrated’ the Rwanda judgement. Backbenchers on the Tory right are calling for a drastic overhaul of the UK’s rights and treaties framework, potentially going beyond their previous suggestion of overriding the European Convention of Human Rights (ECHR). However, the Prime Minister has been resisting pressure from some Conservatives to quit the ECHR, instead hinting he could change UK laws “if necessary” and may reconsider “international relationships”.
