A performance by the Dutch-Moroccan singer Karima el Fillali at BIJ ANDREAS in Naarden. She sings a number of songs from her debut album ’Bihar el Hawa’ (Seas of Love).
Karima is the daughter of a Moroccan father and a Dutch mother and grew up in the Westland. During a musical trip to Morocco she became interested in traditional spiritual Arabic singing.
With her debut album ’Bihar El Hawa’ she pays tribute to the mystical traditions and cultural identities of her ancestors in North Africa. She combines thousand-year-old Sufi poetry and traditional Arabic singing techniques, with contemporary compositions and beats.
In this session she is accompanied by the Arthema String Quartet and tape. Karima wrote the music together with Kaveh Vares and Daniel Tiuri Wils. The lyrics are by Mansur Al Hallaj.
The melodies are deeply inspired by the art of tarab – meaning ecstasy in Arabic – and by the Sahraoui singing techniques of her Sahara-dwelling forefathers. Her influences include Oum Kalthoum, Portishead, Cypress Hill, and Björk – but her own style is deeply rooted in Quranic recitation techniques.
