In 1892, a British expedition was set out to photograph Manila’s mountainsides and their rumored temples and villages, as Manila was home to a blend of people that had learned to live together, the Spanish colonizers and the Ongo Longos, the Filipino people of the mountains. Competition was fierce not only for food, but for the wonderful vistas along the way. Instead, the expedition found a Manila in distress, and wondered if anything survived up in the mountains, where all the mud had fallen from.
