Raffles City Chongqing is suite of eight buildings in Yuzhong District, Chongqing, China. It features a 300-metre-long horizontal skybridge called “Crystal“ that connects the top of four of the skycrapers. The skybridge will be the second highest in the world after the Kingdom Centre. Raffles City Chongqing is located at the very heart of the city, facing the junction of the Yangtze River and Jialing River. This strategic location attaches a great deal of symbolic significance to the super-scale development—as an icon of booming Chongqing. The design was inspired by the historic images of great Chinese sailing vessels on the river, paying tribute to Chongqing’s noble past as a trading centre. This mixed-use development will consist of a shopping mall and eight towers for residential, office, serviced residence and hotel use, yielding a total GFA exceeding 1,127,000m². The complex will also serve as an important transportation hub integrating bus terminal, subway station and ferry terminal. Arup is providing structural engineering services for all design stages for this largest ever Raffles City development in the world. Chongqing’s Raffles City is 10th Raffles City development in World and is largest of them all. The complex has an ambitious structure with eight towers gently arcing toward the water, forming the ‘apex’ to the city’s peninsula—like the great masts of a ship with its sail pulling the city forward. Following eight years of design, development, and construction, Safdie Architects is nearing completion on its latest project in China: Raffles City Chongqing, a vibrant complex which combines office, residential, hotel, retail, and recreational facilities across a 22.7 acre site, embedded within the densely developed Yuzhong district. Situated at the confluence of the Yangtze and Jialing rivers, the historically significant site was once home to the city’s most important gateway and the imperial entrance to the city: Chaotian Gate. The area was also Chongqing’s foremost riverfront trading post which has traditionally driven development in this inland city, catalyzing its evolution to become one of the world’s fastest-growing and densest cities with a greater metropolitan population of over 30 million people. A phased opening of Raffles City Chongqing commenced in September 2019 with the unveiling of a 220,000 sq.m., five-story retail galleria and continues into early 2020, culminating with the opening of The Crystal, a 300m-long horizontal skyscraper perched at 250m and stretching across four of the development’s eight towers. Inherently site-specific, Safdie Architects’ design for Raffles City Chongqing responds to the city’s character as well as its mountainous landscape and extreme climate. The project embodies a considered approach to issues of population density, community connectivity, and urban renewal within a highly developed city center. Located at the confluence of Yangtze and Jialing rivers, Raffles City Chongqing is designed by world-renowned architect Moshe Safdie, who drew inspiration from the region’s thousand years of waterway transportation culture to create an image of powerful sails upon the river for Raffles City Chongqing to symbolise the host city’s surging growth. With a total investment of RMB24 billion and a total construction floor area of million sq m, Raffles City Chongqing brings together a 235,000-sq m shopping mall, 150,000-sq m of Grade A office space, 1,400 residential apartments, Ascott Raffles City Chongqing serviced residence and InterContinental Chongqing Raffles City hotel.
