Modern Saw Mills In Georgetown (1953)

Georgetown, British Guiana. It was started in 1951 and just completed. Working in it are 300 local men and in the forest where the Green Hart trees are felled another 300 work. Trees are transported 90 miles from Wineperu (Winney Peru). Mill workers average 17 BG Dollars per week (BG Dollars 4/20). Output 1 1/4 million cubic ft per year. Trees used are between 80 & 100 years old. The Colonial Development Corporation has spent £2,000,000 in erecting this sawmill. GV. of saw mill.
