Butoh Dance is a journey through the character and mind of Conan Amok, a contemporary Butoh dancer who takes his traditional Japanese performance art and philosophy onto the neon and gritty streets of Shibuya, Tokyo. A former member of the prestigious Dairakudakan Butoh group, Amok is a key figure in pushing the art of Butoh into a modern Japanese lifestyle and conveying the depth behind it. Contrary to most other forms of dance that focus on looking up to the heavens, Butoh leverages the performer’s gravitational connection to the earth and a physical response to the world around him, responding in a primal and visceral way that, whilst abstract, is compelling in its honesty to human nature.
