This was the first year all Oldsmobile’s came exclusively with the Rocket V-8. The rocket engine was an all-new design that pumped out 135hp. Quite an accomplishment when you consider the ever-popular Ford Flathead V-8 was putting out 35 less horsepower. The 1951-52 Rocket 88 was an instant hit with its sleek design. It didn’t hurt that the 88 Rocket was also crowned “King of Nascar“. Some even consider the Rocket 88 the predecessor to the muscle car era.
