Practice your close voicings with this groovy standard “Moanin’“.
Close voicings are often called “rootless voicings“, or - when played in the left hand - “left hand voicings“. They are the foundation of jazz piano playing, and should be practiced until they become second nature!
For maj7 and min7 chords we use 9th chords (maj9 and min9) without the root. For dom7 chords we use guide tones 9 and 13, again without the root.
Since Moanin’ is written in a minor tonality (F minor), we should treat the Fm chord as a first degree which is usually played as a min6 chord!
