Lisa Gade reviews the 5th generation 14” Lenovo ThinkPad X1 Carbon— a very thin and light Ultrabook that weighs 2.5 lb. / kg and is 16mm thick (0.6”). The 2017 X1 Carbon has been refreshed with Intel Kaby Lake 7th gen dual core 15 watt Core i5 and i7 CPUs, and it now two Thunderbolt 3 ports as well as two USB 3.0, HDMI, Ethernet via dongle adapter, a microSD card slot, optional LTE-A 4G and audio. The laptop is available with up to 16 gigs of RAM and it has an M.2 SSD (PCIe NVMe is standard and SATA is also available). This is a traditional notebook (no touch screen or 360 degree hinge— that’s available in the ThinkPad X1 Yoga). Lenovo offers it with a full HD IPS matte display and QHD is optional. Lenovo’s excellent ThinkPad backlit keyboard, a NavPoint with hardware buttons and a fingerprint scanner are standard.
