Howard shares his connection to the printing industry for National Newspaper Carrier Day (Sept. 4)
September 4th is National Newspaper Carrier Day. This day recognizes the dedicated newspaper carriers who deliver the news door to door, a job that has been on decline as newspapers shift to a more digital format. This day is also the anniversary of the hiring of the first newspaper carrier in the United States, when Benjamin Day was hired by the New York Sun on September 4, 1833.
In honor of today, Howard shares his connection to the printing industry. Howard typeset the masthead of the newspaper he was a substitute carrier for when he was a teenager. The font is Engravers Old English. The Oakland Tribune was founded in 1874 and is still published weekly today.
