Aachen; Coronation Site of 31 Holy Roman Emperors (Oldest Photographs, 1850-1940) Imperial Germany

Howdy. Today we will look at approximately 80 of the oldest photographs of Aachen, Germany, which was, for many centuries in the ancient past, the location for the coronation of the Holy Roman Emperor. Aachen grew rapidly under Charlemagne and continued to grow during the coronations of a total of 31 Holy Roman Emperors in this city. Aachen was considered to be the winter getaway for the Emperors, who would often spend Christmas through Easter inside the palace at Aachen. Today we will view the oldest identifiable photographs of the Free Imperial City of Aachen, which actually lost this status in 1801 after the French Invasion, but much of the architecture we see in today’s video dates to before that year.
