’BADALA’ by Songhoy Blues
“Ir Badala“ in Songhai means “I Don’t Give a ****“, and is inspired by the youth in Mali, especially young women, who are pushing back against patriarchy & societal controls.
They are empowering themselves & taking ownership of their voices, their bodies & their futures. This song celebrates that courage, fearlessness & agency through the story of a woman ending her relationship, and choosing her own destiny.
Co-produced by Songhoy Blues, Mr Haidara and Milenium Communication in Bamako, Mali.
Costumes and style by Mariah Bocoum.
Featuring bikers from the Malian motorcycle club, Motards Team Bamako.
’Badala’ is the lead track from Songhoy Blues’ third album ’Optimisme’ - in stores now.
