Sept haï-kaïs is a song cycle by Maurice Delage scored for soprano, flute, oboe, clarinet, piano, and string quartet. The work, written in 1924, sets classical Japanese poetry, translated to French by Delage himself. True to the spirit of the poems, the work is brief, typically lasting only around 5 minutes.
Delage had long been fascinated by Japanese culture and music, having visited the country in 1912. He shared this enthusiasm with his friend Igor Stravinsky, who used Delage’s translations of Japanese poetry in his 1913 song cycle Tr
