Volbach was born in 1861 in Wipperfürth. After he was a student of the Cologne Conservatory with Ferdinand Hiller for a short time, he resumed his previously abandoned school education in Bruchsal , where he also passed his high school diploma. He studied philosophy at the universities of Heidelberg and Bonn .
