The following is a quote from McDaniel about those times: “In the symphony, I was put in the percussion section, of course, but I was actually brought there to sing with the orchestra. There was no “slot“, as they called it, for a singer in the orchestra so I had to be listed as playing an instrument which I also did. I was in the 7th Army Symphony for only a year and perhaps a little less, but they were wonderful months and I remember with great joy every minute.“
