WATCH: Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders recalls trip to Iraq with President Trump

Arkansas Gov. Sarah Huckabee Sanders delivered the Republican address to the nation in response to President Joe Biden’s State of the Union speech Tuesday night. In her remarks, Sanders recalled a story from Christmas in 2018, when she accompanied then-President Donald Trump on a secret trip to Iraq to celebrate the holiday with American troops serving overseas. Sanders said one soldier came up to her and commented that as press secretary, she had a hard job. “I told him, ‘What I do is nothing. You take bombs and bullets. That’s a tough job,’” Sanders said. In response, the soldier gave her a patch from his uniform as a “sign of ultimate respect.” “Overwhelmed with emotion, and speechless, I just hugged him, with tears in my eyes and a grateful heart for heroes who keep us free,” Sanders said. The address focused on what Huckabee Sanders characterized as the stark differences between Biden and the Republican Party. Stream your PBS favorites with the PBS app:
