One of a series of short films produced in 1969 by Charles Grinker and Mert Koplin, “Which Way USA -- Black Views on Race“ provided brief portraits of many African American leaders including Martin Luther King, Cassius Clay, Malcolm X, Sidney Poitier, and others. This episode features Congresswoman Shirley Anita Chisholm (1924 – 2005). Chisholm became the first black woman elected to the United States Congress, representing New York’s 12th congressional district in 1969. In 1972, she became the first African-American candidate to run for a major party’s nomination for President of the United States, and the first woman to run for the Democratic Party’s presidential nomination.
