Ilona Slupianek prepared the 1980 Olympic season with the ambition to throw , hence farther than the world record set by Czech Helena Fibingerova in 1977 (who also had the world indoor best with ). Her Spring training camp with men’s shot put world record holder Udo Beyer in Yugoslavia was concluded by 2 competitions where she showed an exceptional form: on 24 April, improving her PB of set in 1978, and , a new world record on 2 May.
Back home, the East German competed in an Olympic qualifying meet in Potsdam on 10 May, and on this occasion broke the world record again, with at her third attempt. To date (2019), only Natalya Lisovskaya has thrown farther (the current world record is since 1987).
