Jon Opstad - Extensions (Music for Computer-Controlled Prepared Piano) - Album Intro

Composer Jon Opstad’s new album explores a sonic world created from just one instument, a Yamaha U3 Disklavier. The Disklavier is an acoustic upright piano that via MIDI technology can be performed by a computer, opening up a range of musical possibilities. EXTENSIONS explores in depth the range of sound and emotion possible from this instrument through techniques of acoustic preparation and electronic preparation. From using screws and gaffer tape on the strings, to playing the body of the instrument percussively, to processing the sounds with distortion effects and rich delays & reverbs, the album creates an individual sonic landscape entirely from this one instrument.
