Samashki--The Aftermath of a Massacre in Chechnya

This short (10) minute film about the physical and psychological horrors of the so-called “first“ Chechen-Russian war of 1994-96 was shot and edited by Thomas Goltz for the BBC. The film details Goltz’s time spent in the doomed town of Samashki, which was subjected to a massacre by Russian forces on April 7, 1995 in which some 200 Chechens were killed, as well as his return to the town in 1997 just before the second Russia-Chechen war that started in 1999. It is also the basis of Goltz’s book on the subject: Chechnya Diary (St Martin’s Press, 2003), which is now available as an Amazon Kindle ebook.
