In 1994, Jeff Bird created the first custom WAD (data file) for Doom. Without the convenience of today’s level editors, he had to write out every piece of data for the map by hand with a hexadecimal editor.
Of course, this one-level WAD is an important part of Doom history. It was the first of many modifications to the game that has kept it going strong for more than 15 years.
The level consists of two square rooms, with a door in between. One of its flaws, demonstrated here, is that there is not nearly enough ammo to finish off the monsters, if one chose to kill them all. Without wasting any ammo, one would still have to punch an angry Baron over 50 times.
The level can be downloaded here:
(You may have to change the file extension from .pwd to .wad)
Recorded with DOSBox.
And yes, that switch in the other room is the exit.
