LISTEN NOW: “Five sides of fantasy” is a CD presenting pianist Alexander Sonderegger’s point of view on the genre of musical fantasy in the context of different eras and styles. The term “fantasy” has the meaning of “improvisation” or “freedom”, which allowed the five composers included in the repertoire to express themselves through this genre, continually endowing the pieces with new significance. Oriental fantasy “Islamey” in D-Flat Major, Op. 18 Pianist Alexander Sonderegger has performed with orchestras including the Stuttgarter Philharmoniker, the Sinfonietta Lentua Orchestra in Kuhmo, Finland, the Murmansk Philharmonic, Russia, and the Orquesta Sinfónica de la Región de Murcia, Spain. At the Liederhalle in Stuttgart he has appeared with piano concertos by Beethoven, Grieg, Tchaikovsky, and Brahms. His previous performances include the Musikverein in Vienna, the Mozarteum in Salzburg, and Carnegie Hall in New York. Alexander Sonderegger has garnered prizes at many international piano competitions, including First prize and “The Czech Radio Prize” at the Carl Czerny International Piano Competition in Prague, Second prize at the ClaMo Competition in Murcia, and the First prize at the 16th International Piano Competition in Rome. In 2019, Alexander won the First prize at the 21st International Piano Competition of Ile de France and the IKIF Artist Recognition Scholarship Award at the International Keyboard Institute & Festival in New York. Born in 1991 in Petrozavodsk, Russia, to a family of musicians, Alexander Sonderegger started his piano education at the Petrozavodsk State Glazunov Conservatory under the guidance of professor Viktor Portnoi. In 2008, he attended the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart where he was taught by such professors as Kirill Gerstein, Shoshana Rudiakov, Péter Nagy, and Florian Wiek. Alexander graduated in 2017, passing his solo performance exam with distinction. He received additional guidance from Milana Chernyavska, Elena Margolina-Hait, and Jerome Rose. Together with his brother Eduard Sonderegger (violin), Alexander has been performing for over 20 years as the Sonderegger Duo and has appeared at numerous events and concert venues, such as the “Rising Stars!” Festival in Stuttgart, the Gasteig in Munich, and the Konzerthaus in Berlin. In 2019, the Sonderegger Duo recorded a CD with works by Brahms, Szymanowski, and Enesco. Since 2021, Alexander Sonderegger has been a senior piano lecturer at the State University of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart.
